Crystal Palace Stun Manchester City in 2-0 Victory
Zaha and Gallagher Goals Seal Impressive Win
Premier League Title Race Blown Wide Open
Crystal Palace produced a stunning performance to earn a 2-0 victory over 10-man Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Goals in either half from Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher secured the impressive win for the Eagles, who held the league leaders to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park in August.
The win dealt a major blow to Manchester City's title ambitions, as they remain five points behind leaders Chelsea with just 18 games remaining in the season. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, climb to 10th place in the standings with their third win in their last five league matches.
The visitors dominated possession from the outset, but it was Crystal Palace who created the better chances in the first half. Zaha almost opened the scoring with a low drive that cannoned off the post, before he eventually broke the deadlock just before the interval. The Ivorian forward received a pass from Michael Olise and cut inside Aymeric Laporte before firing a powerful shot into the bottom corner.
Manchester City suffered a further setback early in the second half when Laporte was sent off for a cynical challenge on Zaha. The Spanish defender was already on a yellow card and was given his marching orders by referee Anthony Taylor. Palace took full advantage of their numerical superiority and doubled their lead on 69 minutes. Gallagher burst into the City area and slotted home after being found by Zaha.
Manchester City threw everything forward in search of a goal, but Palace defended resolutely to secure a famous victory. The win opens up the Premier League title race and gives Crystal Palace a major boost in their bid to qualify for Europe.
