Zach Arnett Fired After One Season

Arnett Previously Served as Head Coach at Mississippi State

Mississippi State University has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season. Arnett, 37, was hired in December 2021 to replace Mike Leach, who died unexpectedly in January 2023. Arnett had previously served as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator for six seasons.

Mississippi State Athletic Director John Cohen made the announcement on Monday, saying that the decision was made after a thorough evaluation of the program. Cohen said that he met with Arnett on Sunday to inform him of the decision.

Arnett's record at Mississippi State was 6-7, including a 3-9 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs finished the 2022 season with a 42-10 loss to Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Arnett is a native of Alabama and a former college football player at South Alabama. He began his coaching career at West Alabama before joining Mississippi State in 2016. Arnett was considered a rising star in the coaching ranks and was named the SEC Defensive Coordinator of the Year in 2021.

Mississippi State has not yet announced who will replace Arnett as head coach. The Bulldogs are expected to begin a search for a new coach immediately.
