Los Ticos frustrate South American giants
Rio de Janeiro - Brazil were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Costa Rica in their opening match of the Copa America on Sunday.
Vinicius Jr. thought he had won a penalty for the Selecao in the first half, but the referee waved away his appeals.
The Real Madrid winger was brought down by Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, but the referee deemed the contact to be outside the area.
Brazil continued to press for a winner in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past a resolute Costa Rican defense.
The result leaves Brazil in second place in Group A, behind Ecuador who beat Venezuela 2-0 earlier in the day.
Brazil will next face Venezuela on Thursday, while Costa Rica will take on Ecuador.
